From the Chronicle of Freedom.
  From Heaven descends sweet smiling peace,
  And bids the storm of war to cease!
  Disbanding armies quit the plain,
  The thund'ring navies leave the main.
  The drum no more, nor martial fife,
  Shall call the brave to fatal strife!
  . . . [14 lines]
  Let hymns of gratitude ascend,
  And every knee submissive bend!
  To Gallia's gen'rous monarch's praise,
  In every breast an altar raise!
  Let Washington's immortal name,
  Loudly swell the trump of fame;
  . . . [6 more lines, signed] W. A.  March 31, 1783.
